All the mistakes of Br Chopra's Mahabharata tv serial.

Since today is the independence day of India (August 15th), i will expose the truth once again. I will basically show all of the mistakes in Br Chopra's Mahabharata TV serial (1988-1990). I started on August 15th but was unable to finish at that time.
  • Mahabharat Episode 1
Mistakes - The theme song in itself could be considered a mistake but whatever, i'll just ignore it. 
  1. They never showed how the wives of Bharata became angry and killed all of his children.

  2. They did not show how Bharata performed a sacrifice and got a son named "Bhumanyu". Instead they showed Bhumanyu as just an ordinary subject of Bahrata's kingdom not even as a actual adopted son (the way he really was).
  3. They showed Santanu ruling the Kurus alone, they completely axed out the character of his elder brother (Vahlika) from the Mahabharata.
  4. This episode did not show the true facts on how Ganga (a spouse of Santanu) first approached his old father (Pratipa) and how Pratipa sent Ganga to Santanu. On the contrary what they did show is that Ganga only went to Santanu and nothing is mentioned about Pratipa.

  • Mahabharat Episode 2
Mistakes
  1. This episode showed that Ganga and Santanu were cursed by Brahma in a past life.
    1. But the real facts are that it was the curse of Vasishtha for the Vasus (not Ganga and Santanu).

  2. They did not show how Bhisma's name in his previous life was "Dyu"

  3. They showed Santanu himself finding Kripa & kripi in the woods (by hearing their cries), which is false.

      1. the chronology of this incident is debatabele though, we don't know when and what exact time Santanu adopted those two
  4. In this episode when Santanu meets Ganga again he tells her to let eachother lead a new life of love peace and happiness, another fake incident.

  5. In this episode a fake scene of young Bhisma taming a wild horse (the same cookie cutter story of a horse being afraid of it's own shadow) is false, it was never mentioned in Mahabharata.
  6. In this episode their is another fake incident, a fake war to show Bhisma's prowess, the invasion of Salwa.

Mistakes
  1. The misplaced incarnation of Devavrata as the heir apparent/crown prince of Hastinapore.

  2. In this episode it is shown that Santanu and Bhisma went to hunt together and then Santanu met Satyavati, but the reality is different.

  3. The makers of this show lied by claiming the father of Satyavati to be a man named "Dashraj"
    1. The reality is that Mahabharata does not tell us his name, his only identity was that he was the chief of the fishermen in Hastinpore http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m01/m01101.htm
  4. In this episode it is shown that Bhisma finds out about the truth of Satyavati x Santanu through the charioteer of Santanu. But that's not how it actually was supposed to happen.

Mistakes
  1. In this episode it is shown that Santanu is very mad, sad, angry, and upset with the vows of Bhisma.
    1. But in the actual mahabharata Santanu was happy and proud of Bhisma's actions.

  2. Bhisma is shown as justifying his vow when in the original Mahabharata the vow was never a big deal. This episode spent almost 40 minutes on just discussing about the vow that Bhisma took, wasting time and making it overly dramatic.
  3. Santanu is shown as dying when his last two sons Vichitravirya & Chitrangada (the elder one of the two but younger to Bhisma) are still children.
    1. In the real mahabharata Santanu did not die, he exiled himself to the forest after thirty six years, Chitrangada was automatically installed as the king because he was an adult and Vichitravirya was still a kid.

  • Mahabharat Episode 5
Mistakes
  1. Bhisma is shown as installing a mustached adult young man Vichtravirya on the throne of Hastinapore.
    1. The error over here is that in the actual epic Vichtravirya was still an adolscent and not an/a adult when he was isntalled as a king. http://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m01/m01102.htm
  2. All the power of the throne is shown being at Vichtravirya's hands when in reality the king was Vichitravirya but the person that was RULING was Bhisma.

  3. The Kasi king is shown as antagonistic towards Bhisma and Santanu and Hastinpore.
    1. But in the Mahabharata this is not shown, so it is a fake story. I think Br Chopra was trying to mimize the crime of Bhisma.
  4. In this episode Bhisma says that kasi princesses have always wed kuru princes.
    1. Not only is this statement of bhisma factually inaccurate, he NEVER SAID THAT to begin with!
  5. In the episode it is wrongly shown that Salwa was fighting Bhisma.

  6. Amba/Amva is shown as coming to the courtroom of Hastinapore and talking to Vichitravirya/Bhisma after the king of Saubha rejects her.
    1. In the actual mahabharata this never happened, and it is unknown as to what happened between Amba/Amva and the king of Saubha.
  7. Bhisma claiming he will not kill salwa as he spared him before
    1. Mahabharata says Bhisma never fought Salwa and never spared him.
  • Mahabharat Episode 6
Mistakes
  1. In this episode it is shown that Satyavati's father returns to hastinapore and asks Bhisma to forget his promise/vow.
    1. This is a fake scene not present in the Mahabharata.
  2. Mistake 2 - It is shown that the three brothers (Dhritarashtra, Pandu, Vidura) were raised by their mothers.
    • In reality they were raised by Vyasa and Satyavati too not just Bhisma.

    Its glory maintained and itself perpetuated by many virtuous and illustrious monarchs of old, the illustrious Krishna (Dwaipayana) and Satyavati and myself have raised you (three) up, in order that it may not be extinct.
  3. The super fake/fraud incident of Vidura stopping the coronation of Dhritarashtra due to him being blind is shown in this episode.
    1. It is fake because what really happened is that Dhritarashtra was not given the throne due to his "blindness" but Vidura had NOTHING TO DO with the incident. He never stopped Dhritarashtra, and he never proposed the name of Pandu.

And beholding the restoration of the extinct line of Santanu, the saying became current in all countries that among mothers of heroes, the daughters of the king of Kasi were the first; that among countries Kurujangala was the first; that among virtuous men, Vidura was the first; that among cities Hastinapura was the first. Pandu became king, for Dhritarashtra, owing to the blindness, and Vidura, for his birth by a Sudra woman, did not obtain the kingdom.

    • Mistakes
      • Mistake 1 - The game of dice played between Sakuni and Subala
        • In reality their was no game of dice between them at the time of the marriage of gandhari.
      • Mistake 2 - In this episode it was shown that Sakuni wanted Gandhari to get married to Pandu and not Dhritarashtra.
        • But in reality Sakuni did not care about who his sister married. Only king Suvala cared about the blindness.

King Suvala at first hesitated on account of the blindness of the bridegroom, but taking into consideration the blood of the Kurus, their fame and behaviour, he gave his virtuous daughter unto Dhritarashtra and the chaste Gandhari hearing that Dhritarashtra was blind and that her parents had consented to marry her to him, from love and respect for her future husband, blindfolded her own eyes. Sakuni, the son of Suvala, bringing unto the Kurus his sister endued with youth and beauty, formally gave her away unto Dhritarashtra. And Gandhari was received with great respect and the nuptials were celebrated with great pomp under Bhishma's directions. And the heroic Sakuni, after having bestowed his sister along with many valuable robes, and having received Bhishma's adorations, returned to his own city.
      • Mistake 3 - in this episode Dhritarashtra blames his mother for his blindness
        • This incident is false and not present in authentic versions of Mahabharata.
      • Mistake 4 - the dialogues of Kunti and Surya
        • Surya asked "humey kyu balaya pritha? (why did you call me pritha)"
In actual mahabharata this is what he said.

'Here I am, O black-eyed girl! Tell me what I am to do for thee.'
      • Mistake 5 - Karna was born through magic isntead of itnercourse
        • In actual Mahabharata Kunti and Surya had intercourse. Kunti was pregnant for many months.
Quote:
"It was, O lord of earth, on the first day of the lighted fortnight during the tenth month of the year that Pritha conceived a son like the lord himself of the stars in the firmament. And that damsel of excellent hips from fear of her friends, concealed her conception, so that no one knew her condition. And as the damsel lived entirely in the apartments assigned to the maidens and carefully concealed her condition, no one except her nurse knew the truth."
Analysis: So they (BR Chopra) did not even show the character of the nurse that helped Kunti. He failed to show the birth of Karna and Kunti - Surya meeting in an authentic way. Why did he lie to us?

        • Pandu's marriage to Madri was shown in the wrong way, they showed that Shalya offered Madri's hands
          • But in reality it is Bhisma who got Pandu married to Madri
      • Mistake 2
        • It is wrongly shown that Pandu attacked Bengal and the kingdom of Matsya
          • In actual Mahabharata here is a list of the kingdoms attacked by Pandu

        • It is wrongly shown that Vidura and Bhisma advised Pandu to take some rest after his conquest.
          • In reality Pandu himself chose to take rest after that. It is stated that he was planning to go into retirement.

A little while after, O bull of Bharata's race, Pandu who had achieved a victory over sloth and lethargy, accompanied by his two wives, Kunti and Madri, retired into the woods. Leaving his excellent palace with its luxurious beds, he became a permanent inhabitant of the woods, devoting the whole of his time to the chase of the deer. And fixing his abode in a delightful and hilly region overgrown with huge sala trees, on the southern slope of the Himavat mountains, he roamed about in perfect freedom.
Quote 2:
And at the command of Dhritarashtra, people were busy in supplying Pandu in his retirement with every object of pleasure and enjoyment.
      • Mistake 4
        • It was falsely shown that the Panchals attacked Hastinapore then pandu defeated them without a fight as the Panchal commander/king/leader chose to retreat upon seeing Pandu prepared to counter them.
      • Mistake 5
        • after this more fake incidents are shown like Dhritarashtra wanting to hold onto Pandu's crown
  • Mahabharat Episode 9

    • Mistakes
      • Mistake 1
        • It is shown that Pandu also killed a female human/rishi that Kindama was mating with but that is not true. It is not factual.
          • In the real mahabharata Pandu killed a deer and Kindama.
      • Mistake 2
        • It is shown that Kindama assumed the form of a deer to mate with his wife in public.
          • But in actual mahabharata Kindama was just trying to mate and have intercourse with a female deer, as he was interested in bestiality.
      • Mistake 3
        • The curse of Kindama is shown in a different way, he is too furious here and the dialogue between him and pandu is very short.
      • Mistake 4
        • The court deciding to crown Dhritarastra and Pandu choosing to leave Hastinapore is not present in the original text but in this TV show it is.
  • Mahabharat Episode 10

    • Mistakes
      • This episode is about Krishna, his birth and childhood are described in non-canon sources like Harivamsa and Srimad Bhagavatam. You don't find any stories like that in Mahabharata that provide the full details of Kansa's death, Krishna training Arjuna etc (not shown in BRC Mahabharata).
      • One thing i will say is that the role of Jarasandha is being played by a different actor here and later on it is played by another actor.

      • As usual it's about Krishna, so i will skip it.
      • But it has the death of Putana in it. Now i would like to say that krishna was probably a child or teenager or maybe even an adult when he killed Putana. Krishna can be a child, teenage, and adult at this time, but he cannot be a baby to have killed Putana.

        • I'm skipping it because the whole episode is fake, the incidents in the episode are not mentioned in the Mahabharata.

        • Pandu is shown to be attracted to Madri because she was bathing.
          • In actual Mahabharata Pandu's lust for Madri grew because of her clothes and attire not being fully on.
      • Mistake 4
        • Kunti's brother Vasudeva is shown to have been a witness their but the truth is that in Mahabharata Vasudeva is not even mentioned during the death of Pandu.
      • Mistake 5
        • The Pandavas lived in the woods but they were supposed to live in woods on the icy slopes of the mountains of Himavat.
  • Mahabharat Episode 19

    • Mistakes (one of the biggest mistakes is that Satyavati has greyish/blackish hair yet her son Vyasa is shown to already have mainly white hair on his head)
      • Mistake 1
        • Vyasa says that a mother's tapasya is bigger than anyone's tapasya.
          • This line is false, as Vyasa never said that in his conversation with Satyavati in the original texts.
      • Mistake 2
        • Over here Dhritarashtra called Satyavati (his grandmother) as his mother. In reality she was his grandmother not mother.
      • Mistake 3
        • Sakuni is shown to be in Hastinapore while all the sons are growing up (even before the poisoning) but that is not true, his first arrival their (after Gandhari's wedding with Dhritarashtra) is in the second poisoning of bhima.
      • Mistake 4
        • Bhisma goes to meet Ganga.
          • All meetings that Bhisma had with Ganga after the entry of Satyavati are fake. Bhisma never met his birth mother Ganga after the entry of Satyavati.
      • Mistake 5
        • Kripa is shown as just training the princes in knowledge and morals and the definition of word slike "Dharma"
          • In actual mahabharata Kripa was a warrior sage that was teaching the princes on how to wield weapons and use them wisely with skill.

      • Mistake 1
        • The timeline of the poisoning is off. It was supposed to happen before the entry of kripa in Mahabharata a the teacher of the kuru princes. But in the serial they show Kripa teaching them before the poisoning.
      • Mistake 2
        • It is shown that their is only one poisoning in reality their were two poisonings.
      • Mistake 3
        • In this episode Adhiratha was shown as a charioteer of Dhritarashtra.
          • It is another fake story created by people who wanted to change Karna's character because what was their in the original Mahabharata, is something that they didn't like.
      • Mistake 4
        • It is shown that Karna is the only son of the couple Adhiratha/Radha.
          • But they had other sons as well. Like Sangramajit, Vipatha, Satrunjaya and more etc.

      • Mistake 1 - Sudama, a fake character never involved in the lives of Krishna and the story of Mahabharata.
      • Mistake 2 - The mango story where Bhima is given mango seeds by Duryodhana is fake. It is not a part of the actual Mahabharata.
      • Mistake 3 - In this episode it is wrongly shown that kripa said drona should teach the kuru princes. The reality is that Bhisma himself went on the hunt for a better teacher for the kuru princes.
      • Mistake 4 - Duryodhana and Sakuni come to interfere in Bhisma's meeting with Drona.
  • Mahabharat Episode 22

      • Mistake 1
        • The shastra pooja
      • Mistake 2
        • Drona giving Karna his name "Karna" the name was given even before Drona met Karna.
      • Mistake 3
        • Drona rejecting Karna.
          • In actual Mahabharata Drona really did train karna.
      • Mistake 4
        • The timeline of the crocodile incident is flawed too. This was supposed to happen when Arjuna was a fully grown youth, when all the disciples grew up.
        • BR Chopra's show is not even chronologically accurate.
  • Mahabharat Episode 23

    • Mistakes
      • Mistake 1
        • Ekalavya said his father (Hiranyadhanu) is a officer in Jarasandha's army.
          • This is fake and not present in the Mahabharata. All that is actually known about Hiranyadhanu, is that he was a king of the Nishadas, and the father of Ekalavya.
          • Ekalavya and Jarasandha have absolutely no relations/relationship whatsoever. The only time that they are mentioned together in the same line is when Krishna told Arjuna (after the death of ghatotkaca) that Ekalavya and Jarasandha would have both fought on behalf of Duryodhana during the Kurukshetra war if they were still alive.
      • Mistake 2
        • All the princes and disciples are shown as being on foot on the floor on the ground and not on chariots as they really were.
      • Mistake 3
        • Ekalavya's body is shown as shining with light like a mirror.
          • In Mahabharata his body is described as being smeared with filth.
      • Mistake 4
        • Karna's training under Parasurama is shown to happen under the woods.
          • In reality he was training on a mountain called "Mahendra" so he could not be training in the woods.
            • He only went in the woods when he killed a calf, and that was during the time of his training with Parasurama, but at that time he was not on the Mahendra mountain.
              • Mountains have woods. But BR Chopra did not choose a setting that even looked remotely close to a mountain to show the training of Karna.
      • Mistake 5
        • Aswathama and Drona setting up the bird eye test to see if Arjuna is really the best.
          • It was all set up by Drona not by Aswathama in the actual mahabharata.
      • Mistake 6
        • In the Tournament several characters like Somadatta, Vahlika and Vyasa are missing as they are the ones who told Dhritarashtra to let the next generation show how proficient they are in weapons. They gave the idea for the tournament (in the Mahabharata).
  • Mahabharat Episode 24

    • Mistakes
      • Mistake 1
        • Duryodhana and Bhima's mace fight, in mahabharata they did not have a mace fight during the tournament, aswathama stopped them before they could even fight.
      • Mistake 2
        • Yudhishthira's spear fight where he defeats everyone of his younger brothers and cousins, including Arjuna, Bhima and Duryodhana!
          • It was probably the biggest lie in this episode.
          • And it should be noted that the spear was not supposed to be Yudhishthira's main weapon in the Mahabharata, he never fought with a spear, he only fought with bows, arrows, darts and swords and nothing else.
      • Mistake 3
        • The scene where Karna fires an arrow (that magically turns into a garland of flowers) is not true, it is not present in the authentic Mahabharata.
      • Mistake 4
        • Dhritarashtra says that the sunset is happening. But if you look carefully and closely you can see its still very bright the sun was obviously not setting. So Br Chopra failed us again.
  • Mahabharat Episode 25

    • Mistakes
      • Mistake 1 - Kauravas and Karna are shown to be fleeing against Drupada for the wrong reasons. BR Chopra showed that they ran away not because of Drupada's prowess but because of Drupada's ever growing army.
        • According to Mahabharata the real reason they fled is because Drupada was too hot for them to handle. His attacks were extremely fast.
      • Mistake 2 - Drona himself gave Duryodhana the first oppurtunity to capture Drupada.
        • That is a lie, it was actually Arjuna who gave Duryodhana the first chance.
      • Mistake 3 - Yudhishthira is shown as participating in this war.
        • In actual mahabharata Yudhishthira did not participate, his participation is only mentioned in the critical edition.
      • Mistake 4 - Drona and Aswathama talk to each other about Ekalavya as if he was something that was actually relevant and important in their lives.
      • Mistake 5 - Parasurama meeting Krishna, giving Krishna his Sudarshan Chakra, which is a fake story.
        • In mahabharata we are told that Krishna got the chakra during Khandava Daha (where Parasurama was nowhere to be found).

    • Mistakes
      • Mistake 1 - Of course the first mistake is Krishna getting his chakra from parasurama, he was supposed to get it much later in life during the time of khandava daha and not from Parshuram.
      • Mistake 2 - The Magadha vs Yadava war of Jarasandha.
        • In the actual mahabharata ninety five percent of the details of these invasions of Jarasandha are not shown and narrated. So BR Chopra just made up his own inferences about what would have happened during those invasions. Just fan-fiction nonsense that he was seemingly free to interpretate.
      • Mistake 3 - The Sudarshan Chakra blinding soldiers of Magadha.
      • Mistake 4 - Viswakarman building Dwaraka.
        • The truth in the actual mahabharata is that Dwaravati (Dwaraka) was an ancient city (even during Mahabharata times it was considered ancient by Krishna), that the Yadavas & Vrishnis fled to, it was not made by any Vishwakarma.
          • Please read the first nineteen chapters of Sabha Parva translated by KMG to know what i'm talking about.

      • Mistake 1- Rukmi disagreed with Krishna wedding Rukmini
      • Mistake 2 - Ekalavya being involved in this incident
      • Mistake 3 - Yudhishthira & Duryodhana decide the punishments of four criminals.
      • Mistake 4 - Rukmini writes a letter to Krishna
        • None of these four incidents were mentioned in the Mahabharata. Read the books instead of the fan-fiction shows.

      • Mistake 1 - Yudhishthira meets Gandhari and tells her that for him her blessings are the only shield.
      • Mistake 2 - Karna is shown as opposing the conspiracy of the house of lac.
      • Mistake 3 - Sakuni mocked karna of his defeat at the hands of Drupad (we all Drupad defeated Karna but the fact is that Sakuni never actually talked about it).
      • Mistake 4 - Duryodhana and Duhsasana are shown to make fun of the fact that Bhima went to go learn the art of mace warfare under balaram.
        • In actual Mahabharata they never made a joke out of the training with balaram.
      • Mistake 5 - It is said that Bhima only learned mace fighting under Balaram but in the books he learned alot more than just that.

      • Mistake 6 - Balarama is shown to be angry for no reason.
      • Mistake 7 - Stories of Duryodhana (not karna but Duryodhana) being a "daanveer" and emptying the treasury of Hastinpore/the Kurus, are false.
        • They are only shown in this serial and perhaps fictional sources but you will never find that story in Mahabharata.
          • He was just a treasurer of the country, it was like a company where his job was to be a treasurer of the money. Duryodhana was working in a bank.

But in view of the evil that is looming on the future as regards thyself, if we conciliate the people with wealth and honours, they would assuredly side with us for these proofs of our power. The treasury and the ministers of state, O king, are at this moment under our control.
Analysis: Nothing was ever mentioned about the treasury being EMPTY, and even if it was then it was obviously AFTER the digvijay NOT BEFORE. Duryodhana only said that he would bribe some people and ministers, he would not need much for it so no signs of the treasury being empty.
      • Mistake 8 -
        • Karna siding with Duryodhana and supporting him yet still advising him against the conspiracy of varanavata.
      • Mistake 9 - Karna and Duryodhana claiming that Jarasandha, Rukmi, Sisupala etc will side with them.
      • Mistake 10 - Sakuni saying that Duryodhana has won over the heart of Aswathama.
        • This seems to a copy of Madhvacharya's mahabharata where Aswathama is shown as an incarnation of shiva, and it is shown that "Kshatriyas with Rakshasa qualities" (the Kouravas) have won over the heart of shiva (Aswathama) so they will always be confident with him on their side.
          • But this is false as Madhvacharya's mahabharata is non-canon and fictional, BR Chopra should not have copied material from their to give Sakuni a line.
      • Mistake 11 - Duryodhana threatening to commit suicide if the pandavas are not sent to varanavata.
        • This is a false incident, what actually happened was that Duryodhana debated with Dhritarashtra and convinced him with an argument to do as he says.
      • Mistake 12 - Dhritarashtra sends the Pandavas to varanavata
        • What was really supposed to happen was that Dritarashtra instructed a few councilors to talk about Varanavata as a charming place. Dhritarashtra did not say these things about Shiva's festival himself.

      • Mistake 1 - At first only yudhishthira was stated to go to Varanavat
        • In mahabharata it was already stated that all five Pandavas are going to go their in the first place.

        • According to Madhvacharya mahabharata bhima became a cook for Virata because he will only eat food cooked by himself
        • I do not know if this is a mistake or not as barring the poisoned foods/eatables their is no great detail given to the food that Bhima eats.
      • Mistake 3 - Vidura sending a message in his words to the Pandavas.
        • In reality Vidura used an unknown language of the Mlecchas to talk to only Yudhishthira and not the other Pandavas.
      • Mistake 4 - Bhima offering to help the miner use a plough to build the tunnel.
      • Mistake 5 - A time limit for the tunnel to be built.
        • BR Chopra makes it look like the tunnel was being built on the last few days in reality it was already being built before those last days of the house. It was completed far earlier than BR Chopra showed.

        • In actuality it was Kunti who brought them (the nishads) over their).
      • Mistake 3 - Karna cutting logs for the cremation of pandavas and once again opposing Duryodhana's idea of the house of lac.
        • In actuality karna created this idea and was fully involved in the plot, he never opposed it and he did not cut wood for the cremation of his enemies.

        • In actual Mahabharata they were pretty happy and joyful after this.

        • Sakuni never gave Bhisma this much attention in the Mahabharata.
      • Mistake 3 - Vidura telling Bhisma that he knows that the Pandavas are alive.
        • In the mahabharata Vidura never informed Bhisma of this.
      • Mistake 4 - Bhima taking up Kunti on his shoulders. Arjuna and Yudhisthira taking up Nakula and Sahadeva on their shoulders.
        • Actually Arjuna/Yudhishthira had no role in this. It was Bhima who took them all up on his arms and shoulders, including Yudhishthira and Arjuna.
      • Mistake 5 - Hidimva is shown as having magenta/dark brown hair.
        • In reality (Mahabharata) Hidimva was described as having red hair.
      • Mistake 6 - Hidimva is being fed wine by his sister.
        • No such incident was described in the book.
      • Mistake 7 - Hidimva talking to his sister about how many humans he will arrange for her marriage.
        • In mahabharata he never said that so BR Chopra lied to us again.
      • Mistake 8 - Hidimva's sister's conversation with Bhima is not shown. In the book they had a conversation before the Hidimva vs bhima fight. But in this show the sister just looks at bhima and gets attracted to him, but then hidimva attacks bhima.
      • Mistake 9 - Yudhishthira stopping Arjuna from intervening in the Hidimva fight.
        • Actually Yudhishthira did not stop Arjuna. It was Bhima who told Arjuna to let him to do it instead.
      • Mistake 10 - Sahadev makes fun of Bhima's relationship with Hidimva.
        • That never happened in Mahabharata.
      • Mistake 11 - Hidimva (she has the same name as her brother) makes the decision to let Bhima return to the Pandavas after she has a child.
        • It was actually Bhima who made that decision not Hidimva.

        • Karna being rejected by Droupadi.

        • Karna lifting and stringing the bow.

        • Jarasandha still staying in the Swayamvara after his failure.
          • In actual Mahabharata he left the scene after failing.

        • Karna telling Draupadi that she will have to wait forever and the garland of flowers on her arms will dry waiting for someone else to marry her.

        • In actuality Bhima fought Salya (not duryodhan) in this encounter if you read Mahabharata.
      • Mistake 2 - Arjuna defeats karna by diarming him instead of making him retreat.
        • In Mahabharata Arjuna swooned Karna, then when Karna regained consiousness him and Arjuna fought and Karna thought Arjuna was invincible so he chose to leave the scene and lose gracefully.
      • Mistake 3 - Karna salutes Arjuna's guru and says besides Parshuram, Indra, Arjuna, Drona, no one can break his bow.
        • First of all i highly doubt Karna was even using one of his own bows (considering the fact that Sakuni gave him a bow).
        • The fight was not over in such a short amount of time (10 seconds on TV, but 10 minutes in the book).
        • Karna's bow was broken by Drupad in episode 25 (non-canon as it is not present in the book, but is still in the show).
          • Actually i was wrong because karna's bow was separated from his hands as shown in that battle. So it was not cut as per this show.
        • But in the Mahabharata book, Bima, Satyaki, and Abhimanyu broke karna's bows.
      • Mistake 4 - Jarasandha still being in the Swayamvara
      • Mistake 5 - Even Vikarna is shown as a hot headed angry individual who feels ashamed and says "AAPNE HAMARA AAPMAAN KIYA HAI PANCHAL NARESH!" What a freaking joke. This is not the characterization i accepted, the portrayal is foolish.
      • Mistake 6 - Kunti telling Krishna about her decision to share Droupadi.
      • Mistake 7 - Dhritarashtra thinks that Duryodhana and Duhshasana had won Draupadi.
      • Mistake 8 - Sakuni and Karna arguing with each other, karna threatenng to cut off Sakuni's tongue etc. (it was probably my favorite scene in this episode though)

        • The training of Duryodhana under Balarama happened but not like this, the chronology of events is off.
      • Mistake 7 - Krishna eating at Vidura's house.
        • What is the point of showing fake stories like Krishna's fake bond with Vidura?
      • Mistake 8 - Krishna talks to Drona.
        • Read the entire Mahabharata and you will find Krishna talking about Drona but never talking to Drona. He has never had a single conversation with Drona in his entire life (at-least not in Mahabharata!)!

        • In the Mahabharata Bhima was holding back the whole entire time, putting forth only as much strength as Jarasandha did, following Krishna's instructions.

      • Mistake 4 - Krishna promising Sisupala's mother that he will pardon 100 of his msitakes.
        • This is a fake story.
          • Because Krishna only said this once, and their is no cross reference to it.

          • The 100 crimes story needs more proof and evidence to be considered true, Krishna has lied many times, he even told Arjuna/Yudhishthira that it is okay to lie. So it's safe to say he lied about the promise.

        • Actually in the original texts Yudhishthira sent a messenger to Draupadi instructing her to act in such a way to fool Dhritarashtra.
      • Mistake 11 - Bhima threatening Yudhishthira.
        • In Mahabharata Bhima did not threaten Yudhishthira and stop right their he actually tried to burn Yudhishthira's hands, but Arjuna stopped him.
      • Mistake 12 - Bhisma talking about a husband's right over his wife.
        • In reality Bhisma told Draupadi that in this world dharma is what the powerful say.
      • Mistake 13 - The character of the Pratikamin is missing.
      • Mistake 14 - Draupadi's disrobing.
        • Whether it happened or not (i am neutral on this topic of whether the vastraharan is an interpolation or a canon incident), it should be worth noting that woman used to go around with their tops open, and without upper garments in the Mahabharata times.

        • In the Mahabharata Draupadi went their with a single piece of cloth on that was still stained with blood.
      • Mistake 5 - The Pandavas claiming that 13 days equals 13 years.
        • In actuality it was 13 months that was the equivalent of the 13 years.
      • Mistake 6 - The chronology of vidura leaving to the pandavas.
        • He was supposed to leave in the first days, not after 13 days.
      • Mistake 7 - Dhritarashtra telling Vidura to leave.

      • Mistake 1 - Vyasa's dialogues with Dhritarashtra end with him tellign Dhritarashtra to punish Duryodhana (if he doesn't listen to him).
        • It actually ended with Vyasa telling him (Dhritarashtra) that Maitreya will arrive soon.
      • Mistake 2 - Sakuni telling Duryodhana, Duhsasana and Karna of the fact that Vyasa supports the Pandavas.
        • If anything then Sakuni was only supposed to tell them of the words of Dhritarashtra.

      • Mistake 3 - Karna encourages Duryodhana to go to the Dwaitavana forests so soon.
        • This incident was not supposed to happen in the first 13 days, after the 13 days, or even within the first year of the exile in Vana Parva.
          • This incident was supposed to happen after Arjuna's return from staying in Svarga.
            • The chronology is completely off which is a mistake.
      • Mistake 4 - Showing that Karna, Duryodhana and Duhsasana were drunk.
      • Mistake 5 - Showing only Karna, Duryoddhana and Duhsasana but no other Kauravas and even no ones wives being present.
        • Characters that were supposed to have relevance here are the following.
          • Duryodhana's wife.
          • Vikarna.
      • Mistake 6 - Showing Duhsasana run away when the gandharvas attacked Duryodhana.
        • Duhsasana stayed fought valiantly and got captured.
      • Mistake 7 - Showing the Gandharvas as ordinary tribals, who had no upper garments.
      • Mistake 8 - Duryodhana wanting a Gandharva women to come with him in his tent.
      • Mistake 9 - No physical fight shown between Karna/Duhsasana/Duryodhana and the Gandharvas.
      • Mistake 10 - Only Bhima and Arjuna being sent by Yudhishthira to help Duryodhana.
      • Mistake 11 - The gandharvas surrendering to the Pandavas without a fight.
      • Mistake 12 - Showing the Gandharvas using ordinary weapons like a spear instead of any illusions.
      • Mistake 13 - Duryodhana killing his servant.
      • Mistake 14 - Duryodhana attempting to commit suicide.
        • Duryodhana did think about committing suicide but he never actually attempted it.
      • Mistake 15 - Karna coming back to the forest to rescue duryodhan only to see Arjuna & Bhima their.
      • Mistake 16 - Karna saving Duryodhana by stopping him from suicide.
        • Karna did say the Pandavas fullfilled their duties as they are Duryodhana's subjects/slaves but he did not save anyone from suicide.
      • Mistake 17 - Drona saying that Karna ran away.
        • He was supposed to say that in udyoga parva not vana parva.
      • Mistake 18 - Karna threatening to cut off the tongue of Drona, swearing by the sun again.
        • Karna has only ever threatened to cut off the tongue of Drona's brother-in-law Kripa (and that too was later in the Kurukshetra war not in Vana Parva).

      • Mistake 1 - Krishna meeting with the Pandavas after the ghosha-aytra.
        • When Krishna met them after ghosha yatra he ahd his wife Satyabhama with him, he did not go alone.
        • But then again as per BR Chopra the ghosha yatra happened within the first year, so you cannot expect accuracy.
      • Mistake 2 - Arjuna going for penance after the Gandharva war.
        • Actually Arjuna went to do penance far earlier on, his fight with Shiva happened before the ghosha yatra (which was supposed to happen towards the alst years of the exile not the first year).
        • The chronology of this show has failed.
          • Kirata Parva is supposed to happen before Ghosha-Yatra Parva (gandharva war) not after.
      • Mistake 3 - Lack of the presence of Bhima, Yudhishthira and others in the conversation of Draupadi and Krishna.
        • Yudhishthira did not make a late entry.
      • Mistake 4 - Duryodhana telling Sakuni that he should prepare for war.
      • Mistake 5 - Indra coming in his regular form to Arjuna.
      • Mistake 6 - Duryodhana sending a asura to slay Arjuna.
        • Here is the identity of that being that tried to kill arjuna.

Analysis: Nowhere is it mentioned that he was sent by Duryodhana.
      • Mistake 7 - No actual fight taking place between Shiva and Arjuna. Showing Shiva just entrap him with arrows.
        • Even Starbharata & Suryaputra karn tv series showed an actual fight taking place between Shiva & Arjuna. So BR Chopra has made a big mistake.

        • Mistake 4 - Ghatotkaca takes Bhima to Hidimva as a sacrifice.

          • This curse is removed from the critical edition.

      • Mistake 1 - Abhimanyu is shown as a little bacchcha running away from Subhadra.
        • Abhimanyu was already an adult by the time the Pandava's first year of exile came around. Their is no way he was a little kid in Dwaraka at this moment.
          • His childhood was in Indraprastha not Dwaravati.
      • Mistake 2 - Duryodhana tries to kill Yuyutsu.
      • Mistake 3 - Karna saved Yuyutsu and stops Duryodhana.
      • Mistake 4 - Duhsasana says that Kunti cannot bring five kids from the forest and claim them to be their brothers.
      • Mistake 5 - Only Bhima and Arjuna go after Jayadratha and chase him.
        • What actually happened is that at first all five pandavas fight Jaydratha's army and kill his ally kings and troops. Then Jayadratha runs away on a horse. So Arjuna kills the horse and Bhima beats Jayadratha senseless.
      • Mistake 6 - Jayadratha is the only king who was involved, he only had soldiers with him and no one else.
        • Read Mahabharata and you can find in the Draupadi-harana parva their were multiple kings including the mighty trigarta ruler (Suratha) who supported Jayadratha in his abduction of Draupadi.
      • Mistake 7 - No presence of Dhaumya "the priest of the Pandavas" in this episode/incident.
      • Mistake 8 - Sakuni talks to karna and tells him to advise Duryodhana to hunt for the pandavas.
        • Sakuni says many foolish things too. Like saying "duryodhana does not listen to me anymore" "victory gets out of my hands" etc.

      • Mistake 4 - Abhimanyu telling Subhadra that Krishna refuses to accept him as a Maharathi until he defeats Kritavarman.
      • Mistake 5 - Abhimanyu and kritavarma fighting each other.
      • Mistake 6 - Bhisma's dialogues with Vidur (vidura) at the end of the episode and of Vana Parva (literally).
        • While it was a cool conversation it does not change the fact that Vidura and Bhisma did not talk to eachother that much in the original mahabharata. Their relationship is a myth.

        • This is false. Why does Duryodhana always get the credit of Shalya? It was Shalya who faced Bhima on the 11th day in a mace fight/duel, not Duryodhana.

        • Why show Santanu when you should spend time on Bhagadatta (something that actually happened)?

        • Santanu died along time ago. No description of him in heaven either.

        • Mistake 7 - Duryodhana requesting Karna to kill Ghatotkaca by using Indra's dart.
        • Mistake 8 - Drona claiming that Ghatotkaca can only be killed by a divine weapon.
        • Mistake 9 - Ghatotkaca's mother (Hidimva) being informed of his achievements/victories.
        • Mistake 10 - No Aswathama present in the battle.

        • According to real mahabharata they stayed in hastinapore for at-least 15 (fifteen) more years after the coronation of Yduhsihthira.
      • Mistake 3 - Apart from these we also have a last mistake of this show showing the fake story of Abhimanyu learning about the Chakravyuha while in his mother's womb.
For me i still like BR Chopra's Mahabharat. With all of it's flaws it is still a much better and more authentic tv serial than legendary bakwas shows like Suryaputra Karn, Dharmakshetra, Starbharata, Sri krishna tv series, Jai mahabharat etc.
Kahaani hamarey mahabharat Ki by Ekta kapoor was bad but at-least it showed a few things that no other show did. For example it showed the fact that Drona trained karna. That Chitrangada (half brother of bhisma who is forgotten in most shows) was killed by a Gandharva. It showed the reality that Drupada defeated karna (BR Chopra is the only other one to show it). It showed the characters like Satyajit and even Kanika. It showed the digvijay of the Pandavas before the house of lac.
If i would rank them in authenticity alone then i will rank them like this.
  1. BR Chopra mahabharat (1988-1990), only the music/soundtrack was good, all the songs sucked.
  2. Jai Mahabharat (1998), it was Sanjay khan's show, it was mostly like a pathetic attempt at copying BR Chopra's show. So many scenes are a direct ripoff of BR Chopra's Mahabharat like the "andhe ka putra aandha" scene. The actors were unfit for their roles, except for Arjuna, Krishna, Bhisma, Yudhishthira, Duryodhana, and Karna, and Dhritarashtra, everyone else was pathetic in their scenes, acting and dialogue. And that's bad, out of 50 characters only 7 are performing well. But it still puts everything below to shame, because it is the most authentic show after BR Chopra's.
    1. Their are many flaws though, most of the show was centered around adi parva, sabha parva and the kurukshetra war. The Vana Parva's incidents were skipped, they only showed two scenes of it, and the Virata Parva was just sped through (though they still showed the virat war in which Arjuna routed Karna, bhisma, Drona, kripa etc). Udyoga Parva was shown only in one episode. It seems like after the Draupadi vastraharan, this show was in a huge rush to end things.
    2. It also has a fake story of Karna having the Pasupata, but Parshuram curses Karna about the Pasupata and not the Brahmastra.
    3. Only show besides the one below to show the character of Duryodhana's son lakshmana.
  3. Sri krishna (tv series) 1993-1996, it started the era of fake shows that have mostly fake scenes.
  4. Dharmakshetra [2014-2015], one episode is better than all of Starbharata. But still alot of fake things are added into it.
  5. Kahaani hamarey mahabharat ki (2008), bad show but better than most modern day ones. It was the only one to show some actual facts like Karna being a student of Drona, the suta adviser Kanika etc. It is mostly a fake show but it has more facts in it than Starbharata does.
  6. Starbharata (2013-2014), their was nothing authentic about this show, their was only two scenes that i liked but they were both fake scenes. They showed a white Krishna, a white Draupadi, suiting the indian mentality that only light-skinned people can be beautiful and relevant. Made Arjuna look tannish, and the war was so pathetic. The Kurukshetra war was the only action sequence they ever had in the show besides Bhishma vs Parshuram and they failed miserably. No sons of the Kauravas were shown. Everyone had arrows coming out of nowhere. I hate this show. The music is the worst.
  7. Suryaputra Karn [2015-2016], (only plus points are entertainment, and war scenes, however unauthentic it was more entertaining than Starbharata, as it showed a much more realistic war than starbharata). But every episode was fake, if you do not believe me then try to watch the first thirty episodes of the show for yourself. It is a complete joke, only the war episodes were good (however unauthentic the war episodes were their action was superior to Starplus).
The real story was much more interesting than the rest of this, no folklore, no fake stories, no blind bhakti, no fan-fiction like Harivamsa/Srimad Bhagavatam/Mrityunjaya etc. Overall mahabharata tv serials are the most fake shows in the world.
It's pretty much a waste of time to watch any Mahabharata serial. Just read my posts instead and you'll find out the facts for yourself. I bring facts to the table, i have studied Vyasa's epic. BR Chopra, Ekta Kapoor, Ramanandan Sagar, SKT, Sanjay Khan etc and the makers of Starbharata have not. They don't even have 1/18th of the knowledge that i have.

    The effort that you have made in writing this incredible post is really commendable. I have started watching BR Chopra's Mahabharata, its boring but because the stories are intriguing so I am willing to complete all the episodes.       The story was very boring from episodes 1 to 19 but starting at episode 23 the story does pick up pace and becomes interesting, i may dislike Karna but at the end of the day his interactions with Shakuni, Drona etc were very entertaining.

      Shakunis argument with Karna in episode 35 was good. But im tired of seeing people overrate Mukesh Khanna as Bhishma and Nitish Bharadwaj (he is better than Saurabh Raj Jain though).

      If i would have to choose between starplus and this Br Chopra then i would definitely chosoe BR CHopra

      I think that Chandraprakash Dwivedi and Ekta Kapoors Mahabharats were also better than whatever is shown these days on starplus, sony tv, dharmakshetra etc. I will not edit this post tho

      I do know after reading articles about the accident at the shooting of Tipu Sultan's tv serial but nothing about BR Chopra's Mahabharat.

      i provided a link for each episode the problem is that this post was made in the year 2018 WHEN these episodes were available to watch online now those episodes have been deleted, removed etc so the links are false, inadequate etc

      however the episode NUMBER is correct, you can search the episodes online though the links will be different, its been watched multiple times in india so people have no reason to believe that i have no evidence

      watching the tv series of Mahabharat will automatically lead you to see the fact that whatever scene i mentioned in this post actually did happen IN THE SHOW so their is no point in me providing another link or you asking me to "share the link our video footage link"

    Interesting article - great effort. However, which 'canon' text are you relying on? You say that some events (eg. the disrobing and Krishna showing his divine form in Hastinapur) are made up but they are part of translations of the Sanskrit text, such as KM Ganguli's translation of the 19th century. Also, no one knows what bits actually happened as the text has changed over time, and it has apparently become longer and also differs regionally! Therefore, I wouldn't be so quick to say that all of those things above were 'mistakes' and that BR Chopra's team did not study the epic. They did lots and lots of research and yes they did take liberties with a lot but then again they incorporated things from different works. Who is to say which is truly authentic? I've studied the epic too but I wouldn't knock someone else's perspective of it like that. Don't get me wrong - I do agree with quite a lot of your analysis above
    But it really made me cringe when you stated at the end that none of them have even 1/18th of the knowledge that you have...

    Many serials distorted the epic but none did that after mentioned BORI critical edition as their source. Hence I liked this serial in childhood(I don't know BORI edition then) but felt like deceived now.

      BR Chopra is definitely the best adapatation but the 2008 series of Ekta Kapoor is unfortunately underrated and overlooked by people they unecessarily hate it for wrong reasons, it was the second best.

    Great effort. In Episode 5, it was mentioned that Bhishma fought with Salya, but not Salwa. The translation in Sacred Text site is wrong. In reality Bhishma fought with Salwa only, but not Salya. I dont know who can bring this to the notice of Sacred text site. Their own site Sanskrit text says Salwa. Every Sanskrit source from Ganguli version, South Indian Rescension, Bori Edition and M N Dutt have it as Salwa. Note that Salya was Madrs brother and he was not even around during that time.

      Thank you but at the same time i follow the English translation and stick to my opinion since their are multiple people called "SALWA" in mahabharat and only one called "SHALYA" it is more easy for me to believe that it was Shalya who fought Bhishma and not Salwa as Salwa was a enemy of Krishna.

      It is more logical for Shalya to give his sister Madri to a nephew of Bhishma as a favor for sparing his life years before Pandu's birth. It makes alot more sense gives Shalya a bigger role and fits into the story like a circle.

    Karna called Draupadi harlot (bandhaki) only. Please don’t go by some incorrect translations.

    For vikarna’s words, Karna chastises him for his childish and immature talk, calling him as “sumandadhIH (extremely dim-witted)” and “kevalabAlyena(by puerile nature)”, but pretending to be like an old and wise man (sthavirabhAShitaM), and argues that Draupadi had been won by all fair means with elaborate explanation and then adds the following as well -

    “If you are thinking that it is adharma(improper act) that she had been brought into this assembly with only one garment, even then listen to me as I utter this best of thesentence. Oh son of Kuru, only one husband is prescribed by gods for a woman. This one is under the control of more than one and so she has to be determined as bandhaki (harlot). I am of the opinion that it is not strange to bring her into this assembly either with just one garment or completely naked with no garment. What ever wealth of these Pandavas, every bit of it, and this woman and all these Pandavas, all that wealth, has been rightfully conquered by Shakuni(son of Subala). Oh DushshAsana, this VikarNa is puerile, but talks like a wiseman. Remove the garments of Pandavas and also of Draupadi”.

    Then Vaishampayana says “Listening to those words, all the Pandavas removed their own upper garments and sat down in that assembly.”

      going by kmg and bori ce (both are authentic) but their are many inconsistencies in mahabharat like the size of armies, the age of characters once sakuni was called very young by sanjay and yudhisthir was considered young too yet he was considered to be older than sakuni AS PER UDyog Parva

    Wow, great article. I always read your article first and then watch the episode. Now I am planning to read real text. Have you read through BORI CE or other sources may I know? I used to think Starplus Mahabharata is best but now I think this holds the first position. The most shittiest was Ekta Kapoor's ewww, rhe acting and clothes!! Ateast this was some how real acting with not much drama despite story is completely modified.I see this for entertainment not for knowledge, coz Knowledge kiye to books hai naaki daily soap serials.

    What's wrong to show that this marriage was being discussed during a game of dice? Why couldn't it be like that? Or not enough scenes in Br Chopra's Mahabharata where characters were doing literally nothing just their boring blah-blah?
    The thing is that in K.M.Ganguli's Mahabharat Bhisma organised this marriage not personally, but through messengers ("Soon after Bhishma heard from the Brahmanas that Gandhari, the amiable daughter of Suvala, having worshipped Hara (Siva) had obtained from the deity the boon that she should have a century of sons. Bhishma, the grandfather of the Kurus, having heard this, sent messengers unto the king of Gandhara.", https://sacred-texts.com/hin/m01/m01111.htm). So someone may consider Bhishma's presence in that scene as a mistake. But to show "King Suvala at first hesitated on account of the blindness of the bridegroom, but taking into consideration the blood of the Kurus, their fame and behaviour, he gave his virtuous daughter unto Dhritarashtra..." on the screen in a form of discussion between Subala and Shakuni during their game of dice is not a mistake at all.

      Agreed but this POST IN ITSELF ("all mistakes of br chorpas mahabharata") is so long that i do not desire to edit or change it so i will leave it the way it is.
      My opinion has changed, but their were many other mistakes i never counted.

      Like in a episode where drishtadyumn was made commander of the pandav army it was before shalya was tricked by the kouravas.

      The mistake here is that KRISHNA said "the pandav army had 7 aukshounis while the kouravs have 11"

      BUT SINCE this was before shalya left that means his aukshouni would also be a part of the pandav army or nuetral before he joins kouravas so the kouravas could not have had 11 aukshounis before shalya joined them.

      Also uluka disappeared once the war was shown.
