Prelude - though i'm not a big fan of Ravan their is a fact that many people have accused me of being a ravan tard and think by insulting Ravan they can make me angry or hurt my feelings. But they always fail at this. I am not a fan of Ravan but the purpose behind this post is to get at the heart of true facts in Ramayan, Mahabharat etc.
I will not highlight Ravan's physical might here. Instead i will talk about other thing's like the laws in his kingdom, the quality of life their, how women were treated in his empire.
Start.
1] He had women as soldiers & guard's.
Quote:
"And the king of the Rakshasas appointed many Rakshasa women armed with bearded darts and swords and lances and battle-axes and maces and flaming brands, for guarding her."
https://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m03/m03278.htm
2] He had great physical beauty.
Quote:
"And dressed with care, Ravana looked like the Kalpa tree in Indra's garden."
https://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m03/m03279.htm
3] He was the lord of as many as eighty four crore people.
Quote:
"One hundred and forty millions of Pisachas, twice as many man-eating Rakshasa of terrible deed, and thrice as many Yaksha do my bidding!"
https://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m03/m03279.htm
Logic - 140 million x 3 is 420 million add this with 280 million and 140 you'll get 840 million individual's. That was the population of Ravan's citizens or army. More of his supporters were actually part of the Yaksha race of Kubera.
And btw (By The Way) if he meant thrice as many rakshasas that means he had 72 crore Yakshas and the total of people (adding 42 crore extra) would be 114 crore (11,400,000,000).
4] His love life.
"I, who having enjoyed myself with you in suitable aerial cars in Mount Kailasa, mount Mandara, Mount Meru and in a grove named Chaitraratha and in all celestial gardens, decked as was with lovely garlands and clad in colorful robes and invested in matchless splendour, visiting and seeing various lands of every description have now been deprived of all sense- enjoyments because of your death."

Comment:
He provided pleasure to his wives and refused to just stay at home sit in lanka all day etc. He was a traveler and roamed across the Earth/World.

5] Ravan valued a mans life;
He spared shuka and sarana.
{Quote}
"Keep away from my neighbourhood. Do not be seen anywhere here. I am recollecting your past services and hence do not wish to kill you. Both of you, who are ungrateful and unfaithful towards me, are just as dead to me."
http://www.valmikiramayan.net/utf8/yuddha/sarga29/yuddha_29_frame.htm
Logic - here he let both of them live when he could have and should've killed them, he gave reasons (because of their previous service to him) due to which he didnt take their lives away from them.

Praised by Vibeeshan:
"He maintained a perpetually sacred fire. he practised great religious austerities. He completely mastered Vedas, the sacred scriptures. He was highly proficient even in the ritual acts. I desire to do, with you graciousness, that which is to be performed to him, who has departed to the other world."

Its ironic Ravana had women in his army considering he commited rape on his own daughter in law.
ReplyDeleteYou mean NIECE in law right?
DeleteEven so look at actions of BRAHMA:
1 - raped jambuvan's mother
2 - raped his biological son atri's wife anusooya
3 - raped saraswati (his own beti)
Or VISHNU;
He engaged in the gang rape of anusuya & he defiled many woman like tulasi/vrinda.
If SAHASTRARJUN defeated Ravan, then maybe he should not have let Ravan live, maybe PULASTYA was the true villain because he saved a rapist and criminal like ravan?
Or maybe shri Raam did not like woman of lanka and that is why he spared ravans life in sarga 59 right? So that ravan could keep raping women inside lanka (he had a massive harem, i wonder why hanuman did not burn that..)
And this NIECE IN LAW was Rambha, she was a characterless female, i dont see how its incorrect for him to violate her
