The opinion of shri dhritrashtr;
[quote]
"That one in their midst, who, having been endued with blazing beauty, shone like the sun, whom all persons deemed unassailable in battle and the very best of all drawers of the bow on earth, was slain by Krishna in a trice, by help of his own great might, and counting for naught the bold spirit of all the Kshatriya kings. Kesava cast his eyes on that Sishupala and smote him, enhancing the fame and honour of the sons of Pandu. It was the same Sishupala who was highly honoured by those kings at whose head stood the king of the Karusha tribe."
[End]
According to him (Dhritrashtra) the finest drawer of bow's in aryavarth is Sisupala not Bhishma, Karna, Parshuram etc. Unassailable mean's "unable to be attacked or defeated" and that is what Sisupal was viewed as, considered etc. People who think namards like karn, bhishm ever beat shri Sisupalji are liars and living in a dream.
The opinion that sri krishna himself had.
"Endued with great prowess, the ruler of the Chedis was slain by me before thy eyes. He also was incapable of being vanquished in battle by the gods and the Asuras together. I was born to slay him."
Sisupal physically can not be defeated by any devta unless that devta is "Indra", "Shiva" and "Vishnu" he had enough power to beat Surya, Tvasthri, Agni, Pavaka, Pushan, Bayu, Varuna etc.
===========
Bhishma's opinion.
[Quote]
"O Bhima, what king is there on earth that would dare abuse me thus, as this wretch of his race, already possessed by Death, hath done today? This mighty-armed one is, without doubt, a portion of Hari's energy. And surely, the Lord desireth to take back unto himself that energy of his own. In consequence of this, O tiger of the Kuru race, this tiger-like king of Chedi, so wicked of heart, roareth in such a way caring little for us all."
[End]
Logic - Sisupal is labelled a daredevil but also got called "mighty armed" & "tiger-like" by gandu Bhishm.
Krishna call's sisupala A HERO.
[Quote]
"The heroic son of Damaghosha, the well-known king Sisupala of mighty arms and great energy, was slain by me, O best of Bharatas, at thy Rajasuya sacrifice."
[End]
Logic - he deserves to be adressed now as MAHANAYAK SISUPALA
==
Krishna listed 5 of his crimes:
"This wretch of cruel deeds, ye kings, hearing that we had gone to the city of Pragjyotisha, came and burnt Dwaraka, although he is the son of my father's sister. While king Bhoja was sporting on the Raivataka hill, this one fell upon the attendants of that king and slew and led away many of them in chains to his own city. Sinful in all his purpose, this wretch, in order to obstruct the sacrifice of my father, stole the sacrificial horse of the horse-sacrifice that had been let loose under the guard of armed men. Prompted by sinful motives, this one ravished the reluctant wife of the innocent Vabhru (Akrura) on her way from Dwaraka to the country of the Sauviras. This injurer of his maternal uncle, disguising himself in the attire of the king of Karusha, ravished also the innocent Bhadra, the princess of Visala, the intended bride of king Karusha."

List;
Burned down Dwaraka & surpassed Hanuman. (1)
Defeated the attendants of Bhoja's king a relative of Kritvarma etc, and arrested many of the survivors. (2)
Freed the innocent horse of ashwamedha but successfully won a battle with the yadava gaurds. (3)
Raped Akrur's wife. (4)

Allies of brave Shisupal.
Quote 1:
"Sisupala rose from his excellent seat, and accompanied by the kings, went out of that assembly."
https://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m02/m02036.htm
Commentary; the people accompanying him were not just kings they were his allies it is clear Sisupal had more power and control than pajeet duryodhan and pajeet hanumanji."Sisupala rose from his excellent seat, and accompanied by the kings, went out of that assembly."
https://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m02/m02036.htm
Quote 2:
"Sisupala that mower of foes with eyes red as copper from anger, addressed those rulers of men and said When I am here to head ye all, what are ye thinking of now? Arrayed let us stand in battle against the assembled Vrishnis and the Pandavas? And the bull of the Chedis, having thus stirred the kings up, began to consult with them how to obstruct the completion of the sacrifice."
Quote 3:
"This Sisupala possessed of little intelligence is desirous of taking along with him all these kings, through the agency of him who is the soul of the universe, to the regions of Yama."
Quote 4:
"There were some among the kings who spoke not a word during those unspeakable moments but merely sat gazing at Janarddana. And some there were that rubbed in rage their palms with their forefingers. And there were others who deprived of reason by rage bit their lips with their teeth."
"And some there were that became excited with anger; while others became mediators."
https://www.sacred-texts.com/hin/m02/m02044.htm
Commentary; it is clear the people who were sisupal's allies are the mards that were angry with krishna and angry at the incident, sisupal had many supporters he was not alone.
Quote 5:
"Because I have come here with My respected elder brother, kings partial to Śiśupāla may well be attacking My capital city."
==========
Sisupal had better speed than raj kumar Bharata (the sibling of shri rama).
Bharat's speed.
Quote:
"Seeing the city of Ayodhya in front, after spending seven nights on his way, Bharata the tiger among men, spoke the following words to his charioteer."
[End]
Logic - after a seventh night the 8th morning comes, it took eight days for him to go south of Kekay and reach the city of Ayodhya.
Gandu Bharat did not wait for any of the followers, he went as fast as possible.
[Quote]
"Carrying the gifts and jewels, given to me by the king who annihilates enemies my followers became tired on the way and I arrived ahead of them."
But Sisupal made it from Cedi all the way to a location seperated by water too (Dwaraka) in a quick amount of time.
In the incident where he burnt dwaraka he had to travel.
Quote:
"This cruel wretch came and burnt Dwaraka, although he is the son of my father's sister."
{end}
=
Sisupala's family.
1:
"The youthful and mighty prince of the Chedis who was of the hue of the dark lotus, and despatched him to Yama's abode with his driver and steeds. Beholding the chief of the Malavas, the descendant of Puru, and the youthful ruler of the Chedis slain in this very sight by the son of Drona."
2:
"Dhrishtaketu, O monarch, that foremost of car-warriors among the Cedis, after accomplishing the most difficult feats, hath repaired to the abode of Yama."
3:
"That lord of Earth, Suketu, the son of Shishupala, having slain many foes, hath at last been slain by Drona in battle."
4:
"Then Suketu, the son of Citraketu, O king, quickly proceeded towards the mighty Shikhandi plunged into such distress and assailed in that manner by Kripa with his arrows. Indeed, the young prince of immeasurable soul rushed towards the chariot of Sharadvata's son."
"Then the prince, O sire, cut off Kripa's bow with arrow fixed thereon, and with another shaft struck hard the latter's driver in a vital limb. The grandson of Gautama then, filled with rage, took up a new and very strong bow and struck Suketu with thirty arrows in all his vital limbs."
Comment - the quote's specifically for "Citraketu" and not Suketu.
5:
"While Satyaki proceeded against Duryodhana. And Srutasravas was engaged with Drona's son, and Yudhamanyu with Citrasena."
Proof that the term srutasravas meant a person related to Sisupal.
[Quote]
"O mighty-armed king, hearing that the son of Srutasravas (Sisupala) had been slain by me, Salwa, O best of the Bharata race, came to the city of Dwaravati."
[End]
6;
"Upon the slaughter of the ruler of the Chedis, his son who was conversant with the highest weapons, excited with wrath, sought to bear the burthen of his sire. Him also, Drona, smiling, despatched to the abode of Yama by means of his shafts, like a huge and mighty tiger in the deep woods slaying an infant deer."
7:
{Quote}
"That relative of the Pandavas, the mighty bowman Dhrishtaketu, the heroic son of Sisupala, the king of the Chedis, is a Maharatha."
{End}
8;
"Sarabha, the son of Sisupala, endued with great strength, first encountered Arjuna in battle"
TO PUT IT SIMPLY; sisupal had brother's, sons, grandsons who fought for the pandav army in Kurukshetra. Not counting "Sarabha" though because king Sarabha protested the horse sacrifice of Pandava's.

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT LORD SISUPALA.
Misconception - "he lost to karna"
Debunk;
Sisupal is only mentioned as being one of the suitors at the kalinga princess's swayamvar he is never mentioned as being a monarch that was defeated by karna. Santi Parva never claims that sisupal was among those who were involved in the attempt of preventing the princess's abduction by Duryodhan. The names of those king's who engaged in battle with karna is not mentioned.
Another part of the story is that Sisupal may not have had all the proper military training, thus he was not at his physical peak or prime as a fighter. If he lost we should consider the fact that Sisupala didnt have a celestial armor or a quiver of divine weapons.
It was not a fair battle with equal footings that can test who is really a more skilled fighter (which is only going to be tested when both opponents have access to same resources). If you see the full side of the coin then you will conclude that even if he did fight and lose then it does not mean Sisupala is inferior to namards like Karna.
Why did Sisupal show Karna respect in Rajasuya Parva?
It's ture that he praised karna by listing him as a king to be offered arghya worship but this is just one drop in a bucket, meaning not the full truth.
Because Sisupal even praised many other character's including a mere prince like vrishasena (who had no achievement's at the time), and a feat less warrior like king Bahlika. He also praised Suyodhana (who had no military victories at the time so far in life).
Basically Sisupala's purpose was to bring up the names of as many monarchs and important people as possible to persuade bhishma, yudhisthir & other individuals to oppose the idea of worshiping krishna it had nothing to do with him considering himself inferior to those monarch's.
Hypothetical scenario if a jealous tiger wants to prevent a lion from getting a award, then that tiger would compare that lion to a bunch of jackal's, rats, and gandus.
JAY SHREE SISUPAL!
Difference between karna & sisupal.
1 - Sisupal burnt down Dwaraka, while karna had no achievement comparable to that prior to Kurukshetra's war.
2 - Sisupal was involved in many battle's and considered unable to be injured, while karna was defeated in a battle by infantrymen belonging to the tribe of Gandharvas, he also got beaten by Bheem (in Rajasooyam), Arjun (disguised as the brahmin), old king Drupada etc. Sisupal however had no such defeat.
3 - Sisupal had been a experienced and seasoned warrior general in Jarasandha's army. But a high rank like that never fell into karna's pocket.
4 - The guy who Sisupal worked for (Jarasandha) had a long list of military victories, while whoever Karna worked under (Suyodhana) had failed too many times on the battlefield (prior to Kurukshetra).
- Jarasandh
- Defeated thirty three clan's minimum including Panchal of Drupad.
- Defeated krishna's family members in Mathura.
- Aided Kamsa in establishing a dominion over the Bhoja's.
- While staying in Girivraja (city) tossed a mace all the way to Gadavasan (location right close to Mathura).
- Beat many nameless king's (whose names were not mentioned).
- Caused even king Bhagdatta to submit towards him and pay tribute.
- Kingdom's of kuntibhoj, kulinda, Ayodhya, Matsya, Bhadraka etc were defeated by him.
- Despite being 2 generation's older than Bheem he lasted for 335 hrs to 336 hour's (14 day's) against him.
- Duryodhan
- Vanquished by king Drupad's citizens.
- Vanquished by Gandharva foot soldier's.
- Bullied & punked around with his brothers at hand's of Bheem.
- Trounced on by the brahmins at Swayamvara Parva.
- Failed to win any battles prior to Kurukshetra.
- Could not last more than 1 hour against Bheem for that mace fight.
- Anyone can infer and confirm who was more successful as a warrior.
SISUPALA WAS A BETTER WARRIOR THAN KARNA BECAUSE KARNA NEVER HAD A ACHIEVEMENT LIKE BURNING DWARAKA DOWN.
MISCONCEPTION - "He was afraid of Bhima"
Debunk; the truth is sisupal was a shrewd man and smart too, his cleverness and cunning mind helped him win many things in life. He opted for a peace treaty to serve many purposes, firstly he avoided mass loss of life by choosing to pay tribute instead of fighting a war.
Secondly he got a profitable deal as he let one of the pandav brothers marry his daughter. Thirdly the pandavs were the sons of his uncle vasudevs sister kunti who is also the sister of sisupal's mother so he was a cousin to bhima by blood. This could strengthen bond's and help him in the future for his ambition's to be complete.
He was willing to fight Bheem & confident of a win.
[Quote]
The powerful king of Chedi, beholding Bhima of terrible prowess in such rage, laughingly said
"Release him, O Bhishma! Let all the monarchs behold him scorched by my prowess like an insect in fire."
[End]
From same link:
"even though Bhima was angry, the brave Sisupala depending on his own manhood, did not tremble in fear. And though Bhima was leaping up impetuously every moment, Sisupala bestowed not a single thought on him, like a lion that recks not a little animal in rage. The powerful king of Chedi, beholding Bhima of terrible prowess in such rage, laughingly said"
Logic; sisupal is described as a brave lion while bheem was nothing but a tiny animal in comparison, sisupala could easily kick bheem out of the earth
Bhishma is inferior to Sisupal.
Quote:
"assuredly, O Bhishma, thou art alive at the pleasure only of these kings. Employed in acts contrary to the opinions of all, there is none else like thee!"
Hearing these harsh words of the ruler of Chedi, Bhishma, O king, said in the hearing of the king of Chedi "Truly am I alive at the pleasure of these rulers of earth."
[End]
Bhishma basically admitted he is nothing before those king's.
Also Dantavakra (sisupal's friend) was not a king of Karush.
Quote:
"Dantavakra, the mighty king of the Adhirajas and making him pay tribute, re-established him on his throne."
==
MISCONCEPTION - "he had no military feat's"
Debunk.
While Sri Krishna talked of Sisupala's wins (burning Dwaraka & beating the guards of the ashwamedh steed/bhoja king) he was also Jarasandha's general in chief.
[Quote]
"O monarch, king Sisupala endued with great energy, hath placed himself under his protection and hath become the generalissimo of his forces."
[End]
How many battles did Jarasandha win?
[Quote]
"That person bowed down to Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and with joined palms he described to the Lord how a number of kings were suffering because Jarāsandha had imprisoned them."
"Twenty thousand kings who had refused to submit absolutely to Jarāsandha during his world conquest had been forcibly imprisoned by him in the fortress named Girivraja."
[End]
Byasa's son Suka said;
"Jarāsandha had defeated 20,800 kings in combat and thrown them into prison. As these kings emerged from the Giridroṇī fortress, they appeared dirty and shabbily dressed. They were emaciated by hunger, their faces were dried up, and they were greatly weakened by their long imprisonment."
Conclusion - Apart from defeating the yadava race at Mathura he had conquered at lowest 33 lands at highest 20,833 lands. Generals were in every war but it is likely before Sisupal their were other characters who served in the role of "general" to mighty Jarasandha.
Sisupal should be involved in atleast 20 percent of those wars. He had a contribution in them, that's what a general is for. 4,000 king's have been beaten by Sisupal, he defeated them all.
He most likely burnt Dwaraka down when Pradyumna, Samba, Sarana, Nanda, Ugrasen, Vasudev and maybe Balram were their. Among people that were not present it is likely only Krishna & Satyabhama were absent (they were in Pragjyotish Pur at the time). It is indeed a possibility as even king Shalva did huge damage to Dwaraka alone when Pradyumn was present.
What made no sense.
{quote}
"Bhimasena and Shishupala and the Karushas, Matsyas, the Suras, the Kaikayas, the Kasis and the Kosalas, all these brave heroes, endued with great activity, assailed Vasusena."
{end}
Why it didnt make sense to me; sisupal was mentioned in the war as if he was actually alive after krishna cut his neck and not dead.
Sisupal can kill shri ram.
ReplyDeleteI agree with u jaideep..
ReplyDeleteEven my prabhu Laxman & mata Seetha would be defeated by the mighty Shisupala....
Shishupala was the portion of Hiranyakashipu. So no surprise there. At the peak of his powers Hiranyakashipu could collapse stars and planets. The powers of the soul acquired through penances and austerities decreases as time passes by especially as they do a lot of heavy karma.
ReplyDeleteMahabharat tells us that ditis beta hiranyakasipu incarnated as sisupal so that makes sense.
DeleteBut ravan was never the incarnation of hiranyakasipu.
BORI fixes the mistake at the end by saying that it was Shishupala's son along with Bhima who was fighting Karna on the 17th day.
ReplyDeletethank u for explaining
